Always a thought-provoking post Alli.
The work on the wall a couple of years or so ago prompted this image – a mirror which distorted your reflection. Not a new idea but was taken before I became aware of the word ‘selfie’.

The term self-portrait is from the first half of C19th in English. Rembrandt was practising tronie making, which is an early colloquial word in Dutch for mug (as in mug shot or “you’ve got an ugly mug”, there is a similar French word – trogne). The works are usually read as experiments in expression, personality types and differences in dress. His practice is closer to our understanding of selfie making.
Interesting post. Thank you.
Elizabeth – I had been curious about the details of Hall’s claim and its implications. Your comment gives me a clear trail to follow. Thank you so much for such a useful contribution.
Your research is fascinating Elizabeth. I wonder if you’ve heard of the Selfie Research Network on Facebook?
Thanks, will definitely give it a once over. Am in the thick of my upgrade and will give your research a proper look too… Bests etc.
